Key Takeaways

Highlands Community Charter is a California charter school serving 15,000+ students across multiple programmes and language backgrounds. Unico Connect designed and built a web and mobile platform with role-based access for students, teachers and administrators, layered in AI for content recommendations, two-way translation and adaptive learning paths, and integrated real-time progress tracking.

The platform underpins instruction, assessment and communication across the school today, with 97 percent translation accuracy and 50 percent faster content turnaround.

The Challenge

Highlands had grown into one of California's largest charter operators, with 15,000+ students across multiple programmes and language backgrounds. That scale had outpaced the tooling — a patchwork of systems each adopted to solve one problem at one point in time.

Teachers managed assignments in one system, communications in a second, grading in a third and translation by copy-and-paste. The cost of that fragmentation was instructional time lost, concentrated on the students who could least afford it: English-language learners and those furthest behind.

01Fragmented tools across instruction and admin
02Manual translation for multilingual classrooms
03No single source of truth for progress
04K-12 compliance and accessibility from day one

The school needed a single platform that replaced the patchwork, scaled to a small district, ran natively on each role’s devices, delivered content in multiple languages without slowing instruction, and integrated AI that genuinely helped the classroom — delivered in usable phases, not a year-long monolith.

Our Approach

Highlands platform architecture

We engaged as a long-running product partner. The first phase framed what to unify into one platform, what to keep as a discrete integrated tool, and where AI would actually move the needle versus add noise.

Key decisions:

01.

Flutter mobile, React web

One mobile codebase across iOS and Android for the device mix; React for the dense data views teachers and administrators need on larger screens.

02.

RAG grounded in the curriculum

Brain AI was built as a retrieval-augmented system grounded in the school’s own content — being right about this curriculum and this student, not broadly conversational.

03.

AI inside the workflow

Translation held to a 97% accuracy bar and AI integrated into existing workflows rather than a separate app, which is what gives teachers a reason to use it.

The solution we built

A unified student experience system across web and mobile, with role-based access, content management, real-time tracking and an AI layer across all of it.

Brain AI (RAG knowledge base)

Surfaces the right content for each student based on their trajectory, adjusting as they progress.

Two-way translation

Operates across student, teacher and parent surfaces at a 97% accuracy bar, making multilingual instruction practical.

English Master

A dedicated module for English language learning that adapts to each student’s level and pace.

Real-time tracking & grading

Live progress tracking and automated grading workflows, with role-based access enforced at the API layer.

Frequently Asked Questions

We built a unified digital learning platform consisting of web and mobile apps for students, teachers and administrators, with AI capabilities for content recommendations, two-way translation and personalized learning paths, and a backend supporting real-time progress tracking and automated grading.

The web application is built on React. The mobile apps are built on Flutter and deployed to iOS and Android. The backend runs on Xano, Node.js and Postgres, hosted on GCP. Third-party integrations include Firebase, Twilio for messaging, Stream Chat, Stripe, Algolia for search, and email services.

The AI layer covers three areas. Brain AI is a retrieval-augmented knowledge base that surfaces relevant content and recommendations based on a student's progression. Two-way translation supports multilingual classrooms with 97 percent accuracy. English Master supports English language learning specifically, adapting to each student's level.

Students, teachers and administrators each have their own application surfaces and permissions. A student sees their assignments, progress and content; a teacher sees their classes, grading workflows and student progress; an administrator sees operational reporting and management tools. Access is enforced at the API layer.

Yes. The platform supports 15,000+ students today and is architected to grow with the school. Postgres handles transactional data with read replicas where required, Algolia supports search at scale, and GCP underpins the deployment.

Flutter let us ship students, teachers and administrators on a single mobile codebase across iOS and Android, which matched the school's mix of devices and kept engineering effort proportionate. The school's tech team can maintain a single codebase rather than two.

Yes. Education and EdTech is an established part of our portfolio. The Highlands engagement covers web, mobile, AI capabilities including RAG and translation, content management, real-time tracking, communications and the supporting backend services.

Yes. The platform is in daily use across the school's instructional, assessment and communication workflows.
