Key Takeaways

Deep Meditate is a mindfulness and meditation app that helps users improve sleep, reduce stress and build consistent wellness habits. Unico Connect designed and built native iOS and Android apps, layered in personalized content recommendations driven by user mood and behaviour, and delivered a calming, accessible interface across both platforms.

The result is a 4.8 App Store rating, a 60 percent lift in user engagement, three times stronger session retention and more than 500,000 downloads.

The Challenge

Deep Meditate set out to build in a category where Calm and Headspace had already set the bar — defining what a first-rate first session looks like, how personalization should feel, and how a free-to-paid arc should work. The question was whether a new entrant could match that quickly enough to earn trust before users churned to a familiar name.

They needed an app that felt first-tier on both iOS and Android, a content engine that adapted to each user rather than serving everyone the same library, and an interface that felt genuinely calm — because people open a meditation app in moments of stress, fatigue or low light, where any friction breaks the proposition.

01Low retention after onboarding
02Matching quality across iOS and Android
03Generic, one-size-fits-all recommendations
04High accessibility and privacy expectations

The wellness category also raises the bar on accessibility and privacy. Users bring sensitive emotional context into the app and expect it to meet them where they are — at night, in low light, and with hearing or motor needs the default mobile experience does not always accommodate. With the competitive window narrowing, the team needed to move quickly without sacrificing the quality that would let them stand alongside the incumbents on day one.

Our Approach

Designer reviewing app wireframes

We engaged as a product partner rather than a vendor, working across product strategy, design and engineering through the full build. Discovery came first — aligning on what to build versus defer, so we entered launch disciplined about the first impression rather than broad and shallow.

Key decisions:

01.

Native over cross-platform

We built on Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android to tune motion, transitions and audio to each platform — feel matters as much as function in this category.

02.

Personalization from day one

The recommendation engine shipped in the launch build, so user signals accumulated immediately and sharpened the engine as the base scaled.

03.

Accessibility as a first-class concern

Dark mode, low-light contrast and calmer interaction patterns were design constraints from the start, not a polish step at the end.

The solution we built

A native mobile app for iOS and Android, supported by a Node.js and Postgres backend. We invested the most effort in the mobile experience, while the backend carries the recommendation engine, content delivery, subscription state and analytics.

Native iOS & Android apps

Built on Swift and Kotlin, with performance, motion and audio tuned to each platform.

Guided meditation player

Background audio, sleep timers, streak tracking and offline downloads for travel and low-connectivity use.

Personalized content engine

Adapts to mood, listening history and time of day, learning from each session to match how a user actually meditates.

Calming, accessible interface

Dark mode by default at night, low-light contrast and accessibility shipped as standard, not as an opt-in.

Frequently Asked Questions

We designed and built native iOS and Android apps for meditation and wellness, with offline content support, personalized content recommendations, a guided meditation player and a calming, accessible interface that includes dark mode support.

The mobile app is built natively, using Swift for iOS and Kotlin for Android. The backend runs on Node.js with a Postgres database. Content recommendations use behavioural data captured inside the app to adapt suggestions to each user.

The recommendation engine adapts content suggestions based on the user's mood, listening history and stated preferences. As a user spends more time in the app, the recommendations sharpen, surfacing the categories, durations and times of day that match their actual behaviour rather than a static library.

Yes. Users can download meditation sessions for offline use, which supports travel, commutes and low-connectivity scenarios. Offline availability is a key part of the paid subscriber value.

The app ships with dark mode, considered typography and contrast for low-light use, and an interface designed around calmer interaction patterns. Accessibility was treated as a first-class concern given the emotional context in which users open a meditation app.

Building natively let the team take full advantage of each platform's performance, motion language and interaction patterns. For a category where feel matters as much as function, native gives the team the headroom to tune each platform to its own conventions while keeping the visual system consistent across both.

Yes. Wellness, lifestyle and consumer health are an established part of our portfolio. The Deep Meditate engagement covers native mobile apps for iOS and Android, behavioural personalization, content delivery, subscription billing and the supporting backend services, which is representative of the work we deliver in this category.

Yes. Both apps are live. The Android app is available on the Google Play Store at play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.deeprelax.deepmeditation.
